Long journey
November 21, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story using the phrase, “Oh, my.” It can be used in storytelling or dialog. What is the cause for such a response? Go where the prompt leads.

At seven years old, my tics began. Teachers smiled when the kids at school laughed at me.
Mom took me to doctors who should have known how to diagnose Tourette syndrome. Their advice? “Make her see how ugly she looks in the mirror, slap her, give her this nerve medicine.”
My son showed the symptoms at the age of seven. His doctor said, “Both of you have Tourette’s. It runs in families.”
My granddaughter was diagnosed with Tourette’s.
“Mom,” my son chuckled. “Her teacher knows. She explained to the class that it’s normal for her.”
“Oh, my,” I smiled.
Your childhood doctor was a nincompoop.

There were several. Mom found the worst of the quacks. The “nerve medicine” did nothing for me, but my sister would sneak it during her monthly cycle to relieve her cramping. 🙂

I’m glad you’ve found good doctors now.

I didn’t understand why I was being punished, and mom never understood that stress makes the tourette’s worse. It was a downhill spiral.

What a change over 😍. I’m glad by the way how teacher explained other kids how normal it is, back then people were not that kind. Oh my!. Nice take on the prompt 😍. have a good day 😊

There has to be a middle ground between abject cruelty and telling someone s/he has a right to identify as a cat. 😂
You are correct, it was a very long road traveling from the place where I was pariah to the place where my granddaughter was accepted as who she is.
