Questions most people don’t ask: Writers edition

Writers often awaken with questions that most people don’t ask.

At my day job, most of the people I write reports for have a last name that starts with W.  Once my mind glommed onto it, like superglue on an unlucky finger, my question for the day became:

In the USA, what is the most prevalent first letter of a last name?

I had to phrase the question many ways, but found an answer at

https://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_percent_distribution_of_first_letters_in_last_names_in_the_US

 Is it the correct answer?

I have no idea.  I’m simply assuming it’s possibly true.

I know that old saying:

But the fact that there was any answer at all astounded me.

I highlighted the top 2 letters.   I suppose you could say that 19.89% of the USA is full of B. S.

  • A 3.75%
  • B 8.96%
  • C 6.38%
  • D 5.65%
  • E 2.03%
  • F 3.63%
  • G 5.34%
  • H 5.59%
  • I 0.76%
  • J 1.36%
  • K 5.70%
  • L 5.24%
  • M 8.28%
  • N 2.13%
  • O 1.63%
  • P 5.27%
  • Q 0.26%
  • R 4.80%
  • S 10.93%
  • T 3.88%
  • U 0.47%
  • V 2.55%
  • W 3.46%
  • X 0.02%
  • Y 0.65%
  • Z 1.29%

Wonder what my next question is going to be?  The possibilities are both compelling and terrifying.
