On the desk, as close to my computer mouse as possible, a coon cat approaching old age soundly sleeps.
He was a nimble hunter in his youth, often bursting through the dog door with mice, rats, birds, and the occasional rabbit. Yes, you read that right. I’ve had to save more than one rabbit quivering in fear on the kitchen counter.
Once, he jumped on my desk with a half-eaten bird, stared at me as if to say, “MINE,” and devoured, with loud crunching, all but two feathers.
Now, he smacks at my computer mouse and snacks on greenies.
The young boy sat back in his chair. A satisfied grin on his face. He enjoyed eating his snacks BEFORE his dinner. His mother wouldn’t find out this time. Nope, he had seen to that. With no warning, a tasty burb escaped his lips. He smiled. Something else he wouldn’t get in trouble for. Belching was considered rude. But his mother would never be mad at him ever again. Neither would his father. It amused him that neither parent had noticed the rat poison in their morning cup of coffee. I guess sugar really does cover up the taste.

Reminds me of daughter’s dog, Sina, a Husky/German Shepherd, that in her youth ate squirrels whole, brought home rabbits to share, and no lays on the deck just dreaming of those good ‘ole days.
Have a great weekend!

Shalom, Namaste, God Bless, and may the universe shine upon you. I don’t know what half of that really means on a celestial level, but I do believe in God. 🙂

Our car also hunts birds, mice and lizards. No rabbits, thank goodness.

I was going to ask if your cat was small or big, but I saw my 8 pound sleek black cat carrying something in his mouth over half of his size as he jumped over the fence so it makes me wonder whether size matters with cats. 🙂

Our cats are a standard size not big like a Coon cat.

Ha! I’m glad this cat opted out of wildlife for greenies in his old age!

They’re a lot easier to catch. 🙂

Nice post! I cleaned up a half-eaten-half regurgitated rabbit once from Captain Midnight who was a great hunter. He left it on my enclosed patio.

Not one of our favorite tasks. It’s so nice when they get older and prefer treats. 🙂

Gotta love the tidiness of greenies. My cat only hunts in her dreams these days, which does have its advantages, as your story points out.

And this story was based on truth. 🙂
