My father owned a moving company until he could no longer strap a piano on his back and walk up a flight of stairs.
He was hired to sort mail in 1964, when your 100% accuracy rate meant more than having only a 5th grade education.
Then, the unions took over and he had to pass a test to keep his job.
Test anxiety meant failure.
Demoted to janitorial, the people hired to fill his job laughed at him while his former boss said he was a better employee than all three combined.
Sometimes, the old ways are best.
Indeed they are. And experience and competence matter more than book learning.

I wish it were that way again. The number of times I’ve seen a competent person, who could have done a better job, passed up for an incompetent person with a college degree would boggle the mind.
College degrees have become an industry, not a “calling.”

You’re so right. The standard of college education has deteriorated drastically too.

Such a painful story with the unfair hiring shift. Well done, though.

True story. It happened to my father. He had to take a second job at night (gas station attendant) at night after losing his job. A few years later, going to a job he hated, he fell at work and took early retirement.
Still, when I look around at what passes for a college grads, I’m appalled. My dad could walk into a bar and come out with $100 (he could count cards) and he could count change back to people.

We once had to rely upon wits and less on technology. Unique skills your dad had.

Seems unfair to have let him go from a job he was clearly doing a good job of. I am agreeing with your sentiments. There’s people with common sense and great problem solving strategies, but who aren’t good at school or who choke at tests, which there are more and more of. There’s people who are good at school but not anything practical.

I went to college with a guy who was on his 9th Ph.D. He was in his 40’s and kept getting scholarships. He’d never worked. I’ve wondered many times if he was 60 and receiving his 20th Ph.D.
