JOELLE’S TALES: FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH #TMAT120 #WRITING #PROMPT FOR DECEMBER 2018
PLEASE participate
It’s not like I’m asking you to be the grinch for Christmas. My husband already took that job.
TELL ME A TALE IN (EXACTLY) 120 WORDS
Welcome to DECEMBER 6!
Today’s prompt is: The time someone or something ruined your holiday season.
So that you don’t feel so alone in your embarrassment, I’ll share a vignette with you:
<_><_><_>
Christmas used to be a special time for me, listening to Carolers singing at our door and watching the Lionel train go round the tree. Going to Burdines on a bus, riding around to look at the lights? They were all part of the magic. As an adult, I loved having fruitcake with friends or family, washed down by hot buttered rum, and playing piano while people sang “Silent Night.”
I loved buying presents for my children, listening to their laughter as they opened them, and watching as they played with their toys. By the time they became adults and moved to other cities, stores were too crowded. HalloThanksChrismaHkah became one commercialized season, the magic died and it’s never returned.
Here are the rules:
-
A prompt for #TMAT120 will be given the first Thursday of every month. The prompt challenge begins whenever it’s that day in your time zone. It ends on the 1st Thursday of the next month.
-
Copy and paste your 120 word entry into the reply section below, along with a link to your blog. To me, everyone who enters is a winner, but if you must have a winner, the entry with the most likes wins.
-
Limit your #TMAT120 post to 120 words. People who participate in limited-word prompts aren’t expecting a 1,000 word explanation before it begins.
-
When/if you publish your entry on your blog, use the #TMAT120 picture to show that you are participating in the prompt. Please don’t alter (except for size).
-
Please don’t use hard-core curse words. They’ll be edited out if you do, and you might not like the words I choose to replace them with. 🙂
-
Take time to read other people’s #TMAT120 & their posts, after all you might make a new friend.

This is easy.
The award goes to my ex partner for getting so drunk after work on Christmas Eve knowing we were due to travel down to spend Christmas with my parents, throwing up in the middle of the road en route then throwing up again in my Dad’s rose bushes when we arrived.
He made it worse by sulking because we didn’t go down the pub before dinner, then told me we had to leave afterwards as he’d promised his Ex Wife to deliver the kids to her for Christmas tea and Boxing Day.
It ruined my Christmas as I saw my parents so rarely and knew Mum had pulled out all the stops for a three day stay.

Easy to see why he was your ex partner. Bet that did the relationship in right there!
By the time you got to the point where his promise to his ex was more important than his promise to you, I was ready to hit him over the head with an iron skillet. 🙂

I eventually left, but not until 1989. His ex and I came to an arrangement after that, and she and her fiance came to us for Christmas dinner, taking the kids back with her for a few days. I never had another Christmas away, but we had some good ones, especially when we were fostering.

Sometime, when we look back on relationships, we wonder, “What was I thinking?” That was especially so with my first husband — it was ALL mistake. #2 was not. #3 & 4 had a mix of good and bad. Sounds like you had a bittersweet mix.

People often wonder why I stayed as long as I did. I felt responsible and committed, but I was fighting a losing battle and things came to a head in 1988. I like to think I did some good though.

I don’t think I answered your question as directly as I might, but here it is:

Being in a place like that during the holidays is never fun.
