TELL ME A TALE IN (EXACTLY) 120 WORDS
Welcome to OCTOBER 4!
Today’s prompt is: Your family dynamics growing up.
So that you don’t feel so alone in your embarrassment, I’ll share a vignette with you:

My sister’s maturity far exceeded mine. She was 2 years 11 months older and looked 15 in this picture, but I looked 9 and I was not a happy child.
Mom used to brag about my sister’s academic accomplishments and I spent the first 18 years of my life trying to do something, anything worthy of her praise. I spilled out my emotions into music.
Our moment of healing arrived in our 30’s, when my sister and I finally had it out. I complained that mom never stopped bragging about her scholastic abilities. My sister looked at me as if I were insane. It seems that mom took every opportunity to brag to her about my creativity and musical talent.

I have two brothers and one sister, all older than me.
Being the baby of the family, Sis considered I was spoilt, favoured and pampered, yet from my point of view I was always in her shadow with comparisons made, even at school.
We were as different as chalk and cheese, each having our own interests and talents. We argued constantly, but never over boyfriends or clothes, and were never actually close as some sisters are.
Bro was my guardian angel, always looking out for me, and tanned my backside when he caught me climbing out of the bedroom window once.
OB however lived away and visited once a month.

Why is it that people make comparisons among siblings? My sister and I are very different, too.
I love the comparison of “chalk and cheese.”

It didn’t help that Sis and I overlapped at grammar school for a year, so the teachers assumed I was good at sport and languages.
I was found lacking and always seemed to be picked on, my natural gift of music and pleasure in writing being completely overlooked.

My sister wasn’t all that great at sports, but in academics. Her teachers thought I was going to be like her and made no secret out of their disappointment. You were fortunate to fing pleasure in writing so early in life.

We were born around the same era, and the description of your parents is the same as mine. It should be enlightening to people who grew up with both parents working outside the home 🙂

I’m the youngest of 3 siblings, with a sister and brother, 4 and 5 years older. They both topped their classes in school and when I entered my O’ Levels the same was expected from me. I had the same teachers and some of them insisted on calling me by my sister’s name. My principal even announced in front of the whole school community that she expected me to top also.
I didn’t study half as much as my older siblings and my mother feared I would fail in a few subjects.
So much to the surprise of my mother and to the relief of my principal, I did top my class even though I didn’t get as many “As” as my siblings.

I’m not sure I can say I was the smartest but I’m really glad I did well in a pressure position. I think the experience helped me later in life.
