Thoughts on aging : The granddaughter effect

Today is my granddaughter’s 10th birthday.

She wanted a hover board, which arrived in the Atlanta area the same day I did.

She makes it look so easy.

Yes, I tried riding on it.

Nothing is more distracting than having 2 people frantically trying to catch you when you fall.  With 6 battering rams dogs at home, I know how to fall quite well, thank-you-very-much.

World’s best battering ram

One of the great things about having a 10-year-old to play with is the fact that she can see past the crinkled wrapping paper and find the treasure inside her grandmother.

My granddaughter has a pink princess ball the size of a moon. (If it were any smaller, I couldn’t catch it).  We bounce this behemoth to each other, throw it at  each other…and laugh.

Do you know how much fun it is to have your son yell out, “Watch where you’re throwing that ball…you could break something!” and he’s talking to both my granddaughter and me?

What harm can a blow-up princess ball do inside the living room?  I’ve only knocked over a tray table once.  And they needed a new entertainment center anyway.

You may be interested to know — or not — that I finally did ride on her hover board.  Yes, I was on my hands and knees so that I wouldn’t fall as far, but I made it go backwards and forwards (all right, I admit that I mostly went nowhere, but at least I didn’t fall while I was doing it).

My granddaughter said, “That look like fun!” and she tried it, too.

Giggles…laughter…love.
