99 word prompt : riptide
September 14, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a riptide. How can it be used to move a story? It could be a stretch of turbulent water or a pull of another kind. Go where the prompt leads even if you find it unexpected. To participate, here’s the link: https://carrotranch.com/2017/09/15/september-14-2017/#respond |
“Exploit human differences, that’s the riptide,” said the future world dictator. “When the natural right to live freely is discussed, find another group to focus on.”
“We’ve been living in the shadows for 105 years,” his wife said. “When will we have full control over the world?”
“When we destroy critical thinking, then there will be true equality for those who are inferior,” he said. “Once college is nothing but extended elementary school, we lead the world.”
“Lords and serfs,” his wife snickered, “Who is the next group to focus on?”
“Those in the minority,” he snickered. “Skinny people.”
Loved it!😂

Looks like Irma has left you undaunted, still writing bright sunny flashes.

We didn’t have flooding in my area and the winds weren’t as strong. There’s a lot to be thankful for. 🙂

Hmm. Will we ever be free? It’s a sad indictment on our society, isn’t it?

To have freedom, we have to have individual liberties. When the state puts itself before the individual (legal resident) you have tyranny.
I took several college courses with the same amazing professor of ancient history. He told us that the form of government that gets the most done is a benevolent dictatorship, and he cautioned us that it only lasts until the benevolent dictator is dead.

Sadly the way many of our governments are going I fear your flash hits home. I love your humorous ending.

I admit I agree with your college professor. I have thought for a long time that democracy is not the most suitable form of government for many societies. Even in our democracies our freedoms are being eroded.

The problem most people have with the concept is that the US is a republic and not a democracy. There’s a wee bit of difference. 🙂

You have me interested. I thought America was a democratic republic. In much the same way as we are a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. If the USA is not a democracy that explains many of the questions I have had since President Trump has held the top job.

The individual states are supposed to be like autonomous countries (These United States instead of The United States). Senators were appointed by the governor of a state but the people elected those in the house of representatives.
There was never supposed to be a large federal government. That began to change when the 16th amendment (ratified in 1913) was tacked on to the constitution (allowing income tax).
The 2nd amendment — the right to bear arms — is supposed to be an unrestricted right. It’s not there for hunting, it’s there to have a way to take down the government if it tries to destroy the constitution.
Most places in the world can’t wrap their minds around the concept of individual liberties vs. the collective.

Thanks for the explanation. I believe we have a problem here with the levels of Government (local, State and Federal). Many services and the control of them are duplicated meaning you often have to deal with different levels of government for the same thing. Personally I would get rid of the States and only have local and Federal but it will never happen as too many politicians would lose their lucrative jobs.
Times change and I believe we often need to relook at constitutions that were designed for a very different society. I am glad we got rid of guns and as a result we don’t seem to have the mass shootings that you suffer over there. The individual right to have a gun versus all the innocent lives that are lost.
I’d have to say I am one that doesn’t go with the individual right over the collective. I think I can wrap my head around it but I think it can breed a some individuals that are racist, homophobic, etc etc. We seem to be going the way of the individual rather than collective as well and I fear for where it may lead.

The problem with any social structure is this: It’s run by people. 🙂
No matter what utopia people create, people find a way to ruin it.

you couldn’t have stated a truer truth.

Now that’s an interesting perspective I’ll need some time to mull over.
