He ran away from home at 14, worked on a steam boat where he learned engineering and Spanish, was a spy for Roosevelt in the Spanish-American war, and got a job in Arkansas running a electric power plant. He worked for the company for about 20 years. He needed a college degree for the job, lied and said he had one, and was a better engineer than those who HAD been to college. He left my grandmother when the last of their 4 children were out of the house. My mom found where he had been buried in 1956.
