A #haiku and a few thoughts about perception

I awoke at 2 in the morning thinking about the way humans perceive life.

There has never been a time in our known history that wasn’t violent.  This is a world of predators and prey.

In the midst of a 1960’s cold war, hope washed over us in the form of a space program reaching for the moon.  We had embraced the potential of life instead of constantly fearing the inevitability of death.

And yet, we understood the need to be prepared for a fight instead of cowering in our homes crying, “Someone has to do something.”

That “someone” is us, protecting our homes and our families, embracing life without allowing the negatives to overwhelm us — or the positives to blind us.

We have forgotten there is a balance
